Hal Jordan – The Man Behind the Green Lantern

Born to Martin Jordan, a former pilot, and Jessica Jordan, Hal Jordan grew up with two brothers. While not much is known about Hal’s younger years, it is known that he sadly saw his father die in a plane crash. While most people would have become traumatized due to that experience, Hal Jordan decided that he would not be controlled by fear. Therefore, he eventually followed in the footsteps of his father and ended up becoming a test pilot in the military. Whether it was the smartest, considering that he found himself terrified every time he flew, is a wonderful question, but that was the career choice he ended up going with. After years, he eventually was kicked out of the military because he assaulted an officer, and instead, he found himself becoming an engineer working on the planes.

Hal Jordan and Becoming DC's Green Lantern

After being kicked out of the military, Hal Jordan found himself abducted by Abin Sur, a dying alien. As Sur was dying, he explained to Hal that he wanted him to take his spot in the Green Lantern Corps, a corps which could be considered an intergalactic police force, and which worked on safeguarding the universe, and had done so for billions of years. Hal ended up accepting the position, and because of that, he was summoned to the planet of Oa, where the Corps headquarters were and where he had to undergo basic training. When he finally finished his basic training and was accepted, he was placed to work with Thaal Sinistro, who used to be an excellent member of the Corps.

Through his time working with Sinistro through the Corps, the two became incredibly good friends. Sadly, things were not meant to end perfectly, as Hal discovered that Sinistro had used his ring to enslave the people of Korugar, a planet supposed to be protected by him. This made Hal attack him, and he eventually turned him into the Corps, who threw Sinistro out. This also made Sinistro the lifelong enemy of Hal Jordan.

Hal Jordan and the DC Justice League

Hal Jordan was one of the many founders of the Justice League – how it exactly happened depends on the timeline one is following, but mostly known is that the Justice League was founded after the alien Appellaxians attacked them. Here, the heroes that went on to found the league were expected to have fought of the attackers, even though they nearly were turned into trees themselves, but in the end they came out victorious, and decided to found the League. Through the times they have ended up fighting many battles together, and Hal also ended up experiencing many things through the team, including the creation of new fears. At one point, the Green Lantern was possessed by Parallax, an entity which were living inside the Yellow Lantern Central Power Battery, and who was considered to be the embodiment of fear. This happened after Coast City was destroyed, and even though his friends in the Justice League helped him break free from the possession, it left him fearful of it.

Hal Jordan and his abilities

Before Hal Jordan became a Green Lantern, he did not have many abilities that set him apart from a normal human – he knew about the military, was capable of flying a plane, knew stuff within mechanical engineering, and were great at hand-to-hand combat. The ring eventually ended up giving him extra powers, that made him a dangerous foe and a great friend. Hal was known to have an incredibly strong connection to the Green Light of Will, which was so strong that he was able to create constructions out of willpower. His willpower also made him able to resist telepathy from others, and the ring itself gave him different unique abilities such as flight, energy projection, force field creations, and many, many more. The ring certainly made Hal Jordan powerful, but there were no way he couldn’t have become so powerful without his incredibly will, manifested in him from him being a small, young child, deciding to not let his fears control him.
