Gotham Knights: What Comes After Batman

Whether you’re a fan of DC Comics, DC games, or DC TV shows, you might have come across the Gotham Knight before. The game is quite popular, and it follows a story similar to that of the TV show. What if Batman passed away? Gotham would look quite different then. Both the show and the game take place in Gotham and explore what would happen further.

Gotham
Knights:
To Be Found on TV

The Gotham Knights TV series aired last year, but it was only on TV for about three months. Airing on March 14, 2023, and ending on June 27, 2023. As mentioned previously, the show revolved around Gotham City, where Batman isn’t there anymore. Without him, crime is likely to take over even more than previously. Especially when Turner Hayes, one of Batman’s adopted sons, is framed for his murder together with the children of Batman’s enemies. They form a group together and become the Gotham Knights. They learn about the larger force at work within Gotham City and realise they are the only ones who can save the city. The show was written by Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, and Natalie Abrams. The show aired with a total of 13 episodes before it got cancelled.

Gotham Knight’s Characters

In total, there are six major characters in this show - Turner Hayes and the children of Batman’s enemies. The first one is Duela Doe, who was born in Arkhum Asylum. Everyone thought she was the daughter of The Joker, but later, it turned out Harvey Dent (who is also in this show) was her father. Then there are brother and sister; Cullen and Harper Row. They are the children of an unknown mother and father who did not quite like them. Eventually, they ended up being true street kids, Harper becoming an engineer and Cullen someone who is ready to fight his own battles. Stephanie Brown is the next character, who was basically raised on puzzles; eventually becoming a hacker and vigilante. Lastly, there is Carrie Kelley, who was Batman’s sidekick for some time. She is always ready to save people and help out where needed.

Turner Hayes: The Ultimate Gotham Knight

Nonetheless, the Main Character of the show is Turner Hayes, the adoptive son of Batman. Just like most children Batman took in, his parents were murdered. This has never stopped Turner, though. He is resilient and driven but never quite fitted in. The world of wealth and privilege that Batman has been a part of never seemed like something for him.

Gotham
Knights:
A DC Video Game

The Gotham Knights, which is more popular, is the video game. Gotham Knights is a role-playing action-adventure game published by Warner Bros and developed by WB Games Montréal. The game was first announced in August 2020 and was released October 21, 2022. Which means it has been out for about one and a half years now.

The Setting of Gotham Knights

The game follows a - as said before - a similar setting as the TV show. However, the characters are way different. The game revolves around Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Robin, who have to protect Gotham City.

The Story Behind Gotham Knights

Batman has been murdered, and thus, the Batfamily has to take over his job. However, not only Bruce Wayne but Commissioner James Gordon has been murdered, too. This, of course, means a whole new wave of crime has come to Gotham City. Before passing away, though, Batman sends out one final message to his family members: “Code Black”. Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Robin follow this message and have to fight many supervillains for that - such as the Court of Owls and Mr. Freeze. They don’t do this alone but with the help of Alfred Pennyworth and Renee Montoya.

Connection to the rest of the DC Universe

In no way is the game actually connected to other parts of the DC Universe. It has similarities in its story and gameplay to the Arkhamverse, but it was explicitly mentioned it is not part of the Arkhamverse. The game is also not based on any existing DC comics or other media. It is WB Games’ own interpretation of certain Batman lore. However, the game does have some callbacks to the films Batman vs Robin, Batman: Bad Blood, and Batman Beyond.

Gotham Knights Gameplay

Throughout the game, players can freely explore a total of five boroughs in Gotham City - as it is an open-world RPG. They can either do this in a single-player mode or in a two-player online mode. The Belfry is the main place of the game, where the settings can be changed, and you may prepare for the next missions or talk to some NPCs. This is where you’ll stay during the day, as the actual missions will take place during the night -during these missions, you go out to explore every part of Gotham City. During those missions, the game works with health and special ability bars to unlock different things. The game is also based upon levelling, meaning that you’ll unlock new things all throughout the game and that enemies will be level-scaled! The game can be played as Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, or Robin - the four main characters of the story. They all have their own moves, skill trees, special abilities, gear, and suit styles. This means it is worth trying out each of these characters because you may also easily switch between them. When playing, who would you pick? Let us know in the comments!
