Ulysses: DCs Dimension Seeker

Ulysses: A History

As a designated seeker, I travelled across the Five Dimensions in search of worlds that could provide the fuel necessary to sustain our planet. Five million human lives will do that. That is what Ulysses himself, an enemy of Superman, said. He travels across the five dimensions to eventually fulfil his plan. But how did he get this plan? How did he come to be? Let’s look into Ulysses’ history!

Ulysses, aka Neil Quinn

Ulysses wasn’t born like Ulysses; it was more of a nickname he received later on in life. First, Ulysses had a normal human name: Neil Quinn.

The Boy with the Scientist Parents

Neil Quinn was just your average boy. Or, well, as average as anyone could be if their parents were well-respected scientists. Bridget and Peter Quinn were scientists working at a research centre called Ulysses. Yes, a research centre with the same name their son would later on take. Either way, in this research centre, there was a laboratory where they were working on dark matter - the dangerous stuff. There were portals to four different dimensions to research all of them. There was a portal from the second dimension through which this dark matter penetrated. It started an earthquake during which many people in the lab lost their lives. To save their son, Bridget and Peter Quinn send their son through another portal, the one leading toward the fourth dimension. In this dimension, there were other human-like lifeforms with which Neil could live… and the energy there could even give him some superpowers.

Becoming Ulysses

For 25 years, Neil lived in this fourth dimension. He had taken on the name of Ulysses - due to that being the name of the research centre. After those 25 years, he came back to his own dimension. Here, he suspected, he would find a destroyed world - but instead, he found a world full of life. In this world, Ulysses - Neil - became close to Superman. Together, they even beat several other DC villains and saved the world. It was then Machinist - another villain - who found Ulysses and showed him the terrible sides of humanity. Showing that not all humans were worth it. Thus, what did Ulysses do? He travelled the four dimensions, seeking out 6 million people who were worth it and setting them on a completely new Earth - a ‘better’ Earth. Superman discovered this and searched for Neil’s parents, who turned out to be still alive. They tried to convince their son to do the right thing, but after the fourth dimension was destroyed, Ulysses couldn't do anything else but blame Superman and become his enemy.

Ulysses: And His DC Powers

Throughout his life, Ulysses had several abilities and powers. He had to survive on his own for a while in the DC Universe and had some great plans; which he couldn’t have done without this.

Fourth Dimension Powers

When Ulysses came into the fourth dimension, he received several superhuman abilities. Mostly, the basics, such as enhanced intellect, enhanced senses, flight, superhuman durability, toxic immunity, superhuman speed, superhuman strength, and super-breath (all on the same level as Superman). However, he also has some energy-related powers, including energy projection and transference. This means that he can absorb energy and transfer it into different forms. For example, he can use that energy for something else and shoot it toward an enemy (usually Superman).

Ulysses’ DC Survival Skills

Not necessarily a superpower of his, but Ulysses has quite some survival skills. I mean, he had to, didn’t he? He learned many things on his own, and that certainly gave him an advantage in certain situations.

Ulysses’ Weakness

Just like every superhero and -villain, Ulysses has several weaknesses. One, however, is known and quite a big issue. If he absorbs too much energy, his powers become unstable. He might not even be able to use them at all.
