Linton Midnite: The Voodoo Man

All About Linton Midnite

Linton Midnite, a not always very well known character in the DC Comics universe, is one of the premier mystics and appears (usually, not always) as an ally or enemy to John Constantine - usually, his enemy. Linton Midnite is quite a mysterious character and embodies the darker and more enigmatic side of magic within the DC universe. He often finds the thin line between heroes and villains.

The History of Linton Midnite in the DC Universe

Linton Midnite made his debut in The Phantom Stranger #10 in 1953 (is Linton that old? Apparently), but it wasn't until decades later that he was reinvented and fleshed out in the comic series Hellblazer. Hellblazer is a DC comics series following John Constantine, but it gave Linton his fame as well.

Linton Midnite's Past

The man called Linton Midnite was actually botn in Haiti but raised on the streets of New Orleans. He leared a bit of voodoo (or well, a lot) on these streets. His specific type of voodoo is a blend of African, Caribbean, and Catholic elements. He became a voodoo priest and earned the title of Papa Midnite.

Linton Midnite before Papa Midnite

It is safe to say that Linton Midnite has a trageic past. Especially the dark magic part of it, coming from his Haitian family. Without spoilers, we can say that this history is what shaped Midnite into the ruthless figure we know him as. He will do whatever it takes to survive in a world filled with the supernatural threats we known well from the DC Universe. When he, eventually, became Papa Midnite, he bacem a significant part of DC's world of magic. Roaming around Metropolis, Gotham, and (honestly) just all around. He will mostly be found in New York City City, where Midnite came to own his own Night Club.

Linton Midnite's Powers and Abilities

Every other DC Character is always hoping to get Midnite on their side, as his powers and abilities (which we'll discuss next) can make him turn the tide.

Abilities

There are a few abilities that make Papa Midnite an interesting person. These include his abilities regarding running a business - his own club in New York City. As well as his ability to easily deceive people and his general knowledge of swordfighting.

Powers

There are several superpowers which Midnite has, that make him quite an interesting enemy. As described below!

Necromancy: Midnite's Form of Communication

Midnite can communicate with, summon, and control the dead. This makes him a feared figure in the magical world, able to compel the spirits of the deceased.

Immortality: Linton Midnite Lives Forever

Likely due to dark pacts and his deep knowledge of voodoo, Midnite is basicallt immortal. While, biologically speaking, he is not and can be harmed - this only rarely happens. Which means he is, most often, portrayed as immortal. Basically giving him centuries to plot his evil schemes!

Magic: Dangerous, Yet Magnificent Within The DC Universe

Midnite possesses a variety of magical abilities. From casting spells and curses to perfoming rituals to alter reality. His magic is particularly potent in matters related to spirits.

Superhuman Strenght: Like A True DC Hero (Or Villain)

Though not as strong as DC characters like Superman, Midnite is stronger than the average man, likely due to his voodoo rituals. This, combined with his magical prowess, makes him a formidable hand-to-hand combatant.

Linton Midnite's Role and Relations in the DC Universe

Linton Midnite’s relationship with other characters, especially John Constantine, is complex (to state it shortly). He is often depicted as a dark mirror to Constantine, tapping into similar sources of power and knowledge but using them for more ruthless and self-serving purposes. While they frequently clash as adversaries, there are times when they must work together to face threats that endanger the entire magical community.

Midnite is also known for making deals with various supernatural entities, often gaining power at significant risks. Papa Midnite thrives in the morally grey areas of the DC universe.
