Detective Comics
#587:
A Toxic Villain

Released in March of 1988, this comic follows one specific story with Batman in the lead. We’ll give you a short synopsis of this story, to see if you’d like to read this as a whole (or a summary in the case you’ve already read it). This comic book includes a lot of references to rock artists and bands, can you find them?

The Snyposis for Detective Comics #587: “Night People”

It is a cold and rainy night when Derek Mitchell (Deke) escapes from Gotham City’s prison, seeking revange against Kadaver, his old business partner. And then, crime happens at Cardboard City, one of Gotham’s homeless communities. Batman isn’t even aware of either of these things - and is dealing with some smugglers at the Gotham Docks. That is, until the police spots Deke, who is hiding among some toxic waste barrels in the docks (where Batman happens to be). An explosion then happens to the barrels where Deke was hiding with - murdering him. Or so everyone things, because only moments later, he arises from the chemical fire.

Appearances in “Night People”

Several new and old characters and locations show up in this comic book - especially the batsuit and the batrope take an important role. But where does it take place and who are our main characters?

Characters of Detective Comics #587

The main character of this story is Batman, like he is in so many of the DC Stories. As his antagonist, Derek “Deke” Mitchell shows up, with Gothams Organized Crime Group (inclyding Harlan Woolf, Bannen, and Floyd), and Webley behind the scenes. Other characters showing up include DJ Dark, Legs, Willy from the Police Department, Babette, and Michael Rossi.

Locations of Detective Comics #587

This story takes place in Gotham City, meaning that all important locations are located right here. That doesn’t mean it’s boring, however, as there are so many places in Gotham we get to visit. Including the Gotham Docks (also known as the Harbor, which you can visit right here on WoMH, too!) and the Gotham City Peniteniary as the most important locations. We also have Allnite Record World, Cardboard City, Dispo-Chem (Gotham) Inc., and WGCR Radio showing up in this DC Comic.

  • Fun Facts about “Night People”

Detective Comics #587 was published on March 8 of 1988, as stated before. However, it has a cover date of June 1988. Despite that, it has also been used after and reprinted several times. This happened in Legends of the Dark Night: Norm Breyfogle Vol. 1 and in Batman: The Dark Knight Detective Vol. 2. The first being because Norm Breyfogle did a lot for this comic. Unlike John Wagner, who is credited as a writer, but maybe didn’t even participate in the making of the comic book? But sources are vague about this. What is certain, however, is that this story is continued in another issue (and thus leaves on a cliffhanger). In that second issue, the story also include several references to several musicians and rock artists, including (but not limited to) The Rolling Stones, Laure Branning, the New York Dolls, Sid Vicious, and David Johansen - like this edition does. Which is most definitely the coolest thing about it!
