What Are Creature Commandos?

The Creature Commandos are a team filled with monsters set in World War II. This team is, of course, a part of the DC Universe, but the original team was first introduced in Weird War Tales #93 that was released in November 1980. Even though we say “full” of monsters, it’s not exactly made up of all monsters. The team leader is a human, and the rest are monsters.

The Origin of Creature Commandos

There was a secret government organization (as always) called Project M. Project … Monsters? Anyway, this project focused on experimental biotechnology and necromancy, basically dealing with living things and bringing back the dead to life. The main scientist of this project was called Professor Mazursky. Their base of operation was located underground in Ferris Island, New York.

The First Team of Creature Commandos

In 1943, Creature Commandos were created. This team consisted of Lt. Matthew Shrieve (the leader and also a human), Warren Griffith (a werewolf), Sgt. Vincent Velcro (a vampire), Pvt. Elliot Taylor (also known as Lucky, a Frankenstein monster), and Dr. Myrna Rhodes (a gorgon). Aside from the Creature Commandos, Project M also created Miss America and G.I. Robot.

Mission Recap

The first mission that the team did was located in France, where they destroyed android duplicates of the Allied leaders made by the Axis. Next, in 1943, the team was sent to Dinosaur Island in the South Pacific. They managed to find a hidden Axis naval base and played a “trick” on it, bringing destruction to the base. In Dinosaur Island, this team also met J.A.K.E. 1, the G.I. Robot. In a way, this robot became a part of the team. They found an underwater advanced civilization who took control of J.A.K.E. 1’s mind using their androids. Unfortunately, J.A.K.E. 1 had to be shut down and it sacrificed itself for the team. Later on, the team met another G.I. Robot called J.A.K.E. 2, who went on a mission to aim a rocket to Berlin. However, the rocket went out of control and went out to space instead.

Members of Creature Commandos

As mentioned before, we have a few original members of the Creature Commandos. However, aside from them, we also have more members!

Original Team of Creature Commandos

Lt. Matthew Shrieve: the leader and also a human. He was a soldier.

Warren Griffith: a werewolf. Formerly, he was a farmer who suffered from clinical lycanthropy. Project M “helped” him gain the ability to transform into an actual werewolf with a special serum.

Sgt. Vincent Velcro: a vampire who can actually transform into a bat and consume human blood. In the modern series, he is called Velcoro. He volunteered for Project M as a 30-year-punishment due to crippling an officer.

Pvt. Elliot Taylor: a Frankenstein monster. He is also known as Lucky. This man unfortunately stepped on a mine and destroyed himself. He was stitched back against his will, making him look like the Frankenstein monster. He also had damaged vocal cords.

Dr. Myrna Rhodes: a gorgon. Later on, she became Dr. Myrra Rhodes, and is also known as Dr. Medusa. She started growing snakes on her head after inhaling strange fumes. Due to Medusa being the most famous gorgon in the myth, Rhodes was nicknamed that.

J.A.K.E. 1: the first G.I. Robot who sacrificed itself after being controlled by the underwater androids.

J.A.K.E. 2: the second G.I. Robot who joined the rocket mission.

Modern Team of Creature Commandos

Aside from the original team, we also have more monsters that joined later!

Aten: a mummy. He was a communication specialist.

The Bogman: a fish/human hybrid monster.

Gunner MacKay: a cyborg. He died during World War II.

Captain Lucius Hunter: a human who was also the leader of Creature Commandos. Just like Shrieve, Hunter was also a soldier.

Dr. Medusa: alias Dr. Myrna Rhodes. After a while, Rhodes’ body became even more Medusa-like than before. She was still a part of the team.

Patchwork: alias Elliot “Lucky” Taylor. He was still the same as before.

Vincent Velcoro: still the same person, but just like Rhodes, he has mutated even more. At this time, he had red skin and white ponytail.

Wolfpack: alias Warren Griffith. He was still a werewolf, but he was even more out-of-control than before.

Creature Commandos The TV Series

The Creature Commandos, aside from having comic books of course, actually has its own TV series! At the moment, it has 1 season and 6 episodes. The executive producers are James Gunn, Peter Safran, Sam Register, and Dean Lorey. You can watch it on Max! It is still going on until now–started a month ago!

The Story of Creature Commandos TV Series

The story circles back to Amanda Waller, the creator of Suicide Squad. She tasked General Rick Flag to enter Pokolistan that was under attack. However, due to the former years with the Suicide Squad, putting humans in danger, the Congress shut down the Task Force X project. So, Waller had to come up with a new idea: creating a team of monsters. Her recruits were The Bride, Doctor Phosphorus, G.I. Robot, Weasel, and Nina Mazursky, and she called them “Task Force M”.
