Jon Kent: Superman but Superboy

The Firstborn Son, Jon Kent

Let’s discuss a member from Superman’s family! His name is Jonathan Samuel Kent, but his name is usually called Jon Kent. Do you know him? Familiar with his name? Yes! Jon Kent is the firstborn son of Superman, the Kryptonian superhero, and Lois Lane, the news reporter. He’s also known as “Jon-El”, but that’s only his honorary Kryptonian name. He has black hair and blue eyes just like his father. At first, Jon Kent was known as Superboy, but later on, he continued on Clark’s path as Superman. And here is his summarized story!

The Origin Story of Jon Kent

Jon was born during… guess what, alien invasion. Clark, as Superman, was about to participate in this battle and help the Justice League, but his teammates forced him to focus on Lois, who was guarded by Batman and helped by Wonder Woman at the moment. After Clark came, he helped take care of Lois.

Jon Kent the Half-Kryptonian

Clark and Lois didn’t immediately tell their son about Clark’s identity as Superman. He kept it a secret, and even Lois used an alias to publish her articles. Jon had a normal childhood until he and his mother were kidnapped. He found out about his power from his Kryptonian side, and after Clark came to the rescue, Jon was finally told the truth.

Jon Kent as Superboy

Later on, he found out that he also had Heat Vision from being a half-Kryptonian. As if more power wasn’t enough, Jon’s Kryptonian powers were found out by a villain, The Eradicator, who wanted those powers for himself. The Kent family had to fight him, even Lois. After that, Clark told Jon how to disguise himself by wearing… you guessed it, glasses, but this time also with a hat. At times, Clark would bring Jon to the Watchtower and introduce him to the Justice League as Superboy.

Jon Kent: The Lost Boy

One time, after discovering his powers, Jon flew at night. Clark was actually against this, but the boy went out without anybody knowing. However, something occurred and Jon went missing. Clark panicked and with the help of all members of the Justice League, they searched for Jon. Batman and Nightwing found him in a cave that he carved with his Heat Vision power. Nightwing helped the boy feel at ease until Clark came. In the future, Jon continued to look up to Nightwing.

Jon Kent in Superman Reborn

Apparently, there was a Mister Mxyzptlk, an imp from the fifth dimension, who was disguised as Clark Kent in Metropolis. He probably didn’t have enough things to do in the DC Universe, so he came back to harass Clark and his family by targeting Jon. He planned to erase the memory of Jon from both his parents. Lois’ memories were already erased, but Clark begged Mxyzptlk to not do that to him. So, he played a game called Infinite Planet created by the imp in order to get Jon back.

At the end of the obstacle, which Clark and Lois finished, Jon showed up. However, the boy was infused with red energy that was the essence of Superman family from the Prime Earth universe (the ones that almost lost their memories were from Pre-Flashpoint). In the reality of this universe, Clark and Lois never married and never had Jon. However, after merging with the essence, they continued to exist as a family.

Jon Kent’s Powers and Abilities

Of course, this page wouldn’t be completed without describing Jon’s powers and abilities! What was he capable of doing?

Jon Kent’s Powers

Being a half-Kryptonian, Jon obtained a lot of powers from his father, including Solar Radiation Absorption, Invulnerability, Superhuman Strength that included Super-Leaping, Superhuman Stamina, Flight, Heat Vision that included Solar Flare, Enhanced Visual Perception (such as X-Ray, Electromagnetic Spectrum, Telescopic, and Microscopic), Superhuman Smell, Superhuman Hearing, Superhuman Speed, Super-Breath, Energy Transference mainly with electrical energy, Enhanced Speed, and Enhanced Strength.

Jon Kent’s Abilities

Jon was able to operate heavy machinery, mainly tractor and semi-truck. He was also good at Stealth and was able to speak several languages. Lastly, he had a strong will that allowed him to overcome Time Commander’s Time Freeze.

Jon Kent’s Weaknesses

Of course, Jon also had weaknesses. He was vulnerable to Kryptonite, as expected from a Kryptonian. Aside from that, he was also vulnerable to Psionics and Magic. His powers were unstable, especially when he was emotional. Jon’s powers were also highly dependent on solar energy, and if he weren’t careful with his power, he could lose powers temporarily until he was recharged.
