Doctor Phosphorus: A Radioactive Mutant

Who is Doctor Phosphorus?

Former Gotham City nuclear scientist Doctor Alexander James "Alex" Sartorius, also known as Doctor Phosphorus, was betrayed by criminal Rupert Thorne after a deal went poorly and was thrown into his radiation treatment machine to die. Instead of killing Alex, the machine transformed him into a radioactive mutant with strong abilities. After the incident, Alex turned into a vicious psychopath who went on a murderous rampage against Thorne's criminal group, which he had taken over. His newborn criminal empire was shattered when Batman caught him.

Before turning on Princess Ilana Rostovic at Amanda Waller's command, Phosphorous had to defend her from the witch Circe in Pokolistan before being enlisted in the Creature Commandos. After the mission that killed Rostovic, Phosphorus became part of Bride's new Commandos line-up.

The Personality

Formerly known as Alex Sartorious, Doctor Phosphorus was a loving family guy who sought to use his knowledge to further good causes even if he worked with criminals. He became insane, nevertheless, after Rupert Thorne killed his wife and child and turned him into a radioactive skeleton. Embracing a cruel temperament, he slaughtered Thorne, his associates, and took over his criminal enterprise, relishing in violence. His supervillain identity was primarily a coping strategy for his loss, even if he initially loved it. He was later captured by Batman, therefore his rule was temporary.

Phosphorus is cynical and caustic, frequently making fun of other people, yet he is self-aware enough to make fun of his own looks. He acts rashly and impulsively, attacking Amanda Waller and trying to assassinate Rick Flag, Sr. out of rage and selfishness. He may, however, reflect on himself and occasionally displays teamwork, developing relationships with characters such as Weasel and Bride. He occasionally shows compassion despite his aggressive tendencies, such as protecting a family because they looked like his deceased son and demonstrating empathy for teammates who have been bullied. These flashbacks to his past self reveal the person he was before tragedy took over.

Powers and Abilities

Doctor Phosphorus was exposed to radiation from Gotham's nuclear power plant, which gave him a variety of superhuman abilities. He has radiokinesis, which enables him to create and control radiation for destructive attacks, thanks to his changed physiology. He has the ability to adjust the intensity of his radiation, melt human flesh when it comes into touch with it, and even burn bullets in midair. He can create radioactive fires with his pyrokinesis, and he can release deadly radiation from his translucent, incandescent body.

Phosphorus possesses superhuman strength, durability, endurance, and agility in addition to his energy-based abilities. He can easily endure serious injuries, withstand bullets, and smash through thick walls and opponents. He is a strong fighter, although he loses to more experienced opponents like Batman and Rick Flag, Sr.

Prior to his mutation, Alex Sartorius was a talented scientist and doctor who was committed to studying cancer. He demonstrated his effectiveness as a crime lord after ascending to the position of Phosphorus, taking over Rupert Thorne's empire by cunning, threats, and strategic planning. His rule was brief, though, as Batman eventually overcame him.

Doctor Phosphorus’ Life

Transformation into Doctor Phosphorus

Betrayal by Rupert Thorne

Dr. Alex Sartorius, a nuclear physicist in Gotham City, made a deal with crime lord Rupert Thorne in order to obtain money for his research on cancer treatments. Thorne killed Sartorius's family and put him through his own radiation treatment equipment in retaliation for Sartorius's effort to trick him by giving Bialya's scientists fake data. Sartorius became a radioactive mutant as a result of this exposure, and he came to be known as "Doctor Phosphorus."

Rise and Fall in Gotham's Underworld

The Power in Crime

Following his metamorphosis, Doctor Phosphorus killed Rupert Thorne and his family over dinner in order to exact revenge. After taking over Thorne's illicit activities, he increased his power and rose to prominence as Gotham City's most infamous crime lord.

Confrontation with Batman

Batman pursued Doctor Phosphorus to the Ice Lounge in an effort to put an end to his reign of terror. Batman vanquished Phosphorus there, destroying his criminal network and resulting in his imprisonment at Belle Reve Correctional Center.
