Detective Comics #33: The Chaos Continues

What is Detective Comics #33?

Back then, we talked about Detective Comics Volume 1 #33 in this blog. This time, we will talk about another Detective Comics #33, but this time, it’s Volume 2! This issue was published on July 9, 2014, so around 11 years ago. This story is rated T for Teen (12+) which means it kinda fits MH as a 13+ site, hehehe.

List of Stories in Detective Comics #33

Unlike the first volume, this issue only has one story, which is Icarus, Part Four. Yes, part four. Meaning we have to go through around three editions before this in order to know what’s going on with Icarus. Is this the one that flies too close to the sun, or is it a metaphor of something else?

Synopsis of Detective Comics #33

In this DC issue, the Squid, a member of a biker gang, was shot by Holter, a member of the Kings of the Sun biker gang. These two biker gangs were rivals, so this incident soon evolved into a riot. Batman had to intervene to stop things from getting worse. However, during this chaos, police came and asked everyone to put their hands up, including the masked guy. Refusing to do so, Batman ran away by creating a diversion using smoke from his gauntlets.

We moved on to another scene where Harvey Bullock, a detective from Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) interrogated Jeb Lester, a Wayne Industries executive. Lester apparently signed off a deal to use containers for human trafficking, and Bullock wanted to know who ordered Lester to do so. Finally, Lester admitted that it was Congressman Sam Young, and Bruce Wayne had nothing to do with the deal. Bullock put Lester into custody while attempting to arrest Young using this new information. Harvey went to Gotham docks to investigate this further, along with a lead on missing shipments from Detective Maggie Yip.

Meanwhile, the story went back to Batman who managed to find one of the bases of the Kings of the Sun. He found out that this gang was the one producing Icarus, a narcotics drug, but they had not produced it in a while. It was also possible that the Kings of the Sun was trying to gain power in Gotham. At that time, there was a gang war between the Penguin and the Falcone Crime Family. It was not surprising if during this chaos, a new gang would want to take advantage of the situation and rise to power.

The story went back to Bullock, who was checking out the Kane Laboratories Plant. Apparently, Batman was also there, and soon they started bickering. Later on, Batman revealed something from Bullock’s past that made the man angry. They were involved in a fist fight, and the story of this issue was ended by a radioactive explosion caused by a victim of Icarus. So tense!

By the end of this paragraph, we know that Icarus in question was a type of drug, and it had nothing to do with Greek mythology!

Detective Comics #33 Characters

In this story, of course we have Batman as our main character. We also have Harvey Bullock as our main detective, although not always in the same place as Batman. As for the side characters, we also have Maggie Yip, Alfred Pennyworth (there shall be no Batman without Alfred), Annette Aguila, and Jeb Lester. As for the antagonists, we have Jonny Loman, The Squid, Holter of the Kings of the Sun, and the rest of the gang members.

Detective Comics #33 Locations

This story mainly takes place in, of course, Gotham City. More specifically, we have Gotham Aquarium, Chateau Doigt, Wayne Manor, Batcave, and Kane Laboratories Plant that is located at Gotham City East End. It is also possible that some of the scenes might have taken place at the GCPD Headquarters.
