Isabela Merced: The Next Hawkgirl

We all know that the next Superman movie is coming up - and so far, we have seen many different things from it. Including the cast and what roles they shall be playing! One of these new members of the DC Universe will be Isabela Merced, who is playing the newest version of Hawkgirl. A character we have seen being portrayed before, but on which she is doing her own take.

Isabela Merced’s Take on Hawkgirl

So, what is Isabela Merced exactly doing with the character? Well, in several interviews, she has opened up on the subject. In the movie, they are going to bring the comic book story of Hawkgirl to the big screen, one that is much darker than what we have seen before. Where she’ll be a part of the Justice Gang, a group not exactly sharing Superman’s point of view. The character of Hawkgirl is going to me more modern, yet one that we all known. It should fit perfect in the story of Superman.

Based on what Isabela Merced has said, we can assume that James Gunn is going to include quite a lot of Hawkgirl’s lore. Such as the reincarnation cycle and her Thanagarian roots. Which Merced has used as a backstory in her acting, to get to know the character of Kendra Saunders (Hawkgirl) much better. Self-awareness with some comedy, is what she called it. Merced really seems to value the original source material (the comic books we love so much) and thus we can only assume that she’ll give us a truthful performance of Kendra Saunders.

In interviews, Merced also explained why she took on the role. Partially because of its significance and the incredibly interesting story, but also because she really wanted to work with James Gunn (which is something we all understand, I think). Any role he would have offered her, she would have taken.

What Do We Know Her From?

Isabela Merced is not exactly new to the acting business. In fact, she has been seen in many different movies and TV shows before. But what are some examples of these? Let’s briefly dive into them!

Isabela Merced’s Previous Movies

In the sense of movies, we’ve seen Merced acting ever since the early 2010s, starring in the Christmas movie Let It Snow and also in the Dora and the Lost City of Gold live action movie. Other known movies where she played major characters are Instant Family, Madame Web, and Turtles All The Way Down. She certainly has a long list of loved movies already!

Isabela Merced’s TV Shows

To stick with the DC Universe for a moment, we’re actually going to see Isabela Merced return here very very soon, as she is also said to star in the new season of Peacemaker. Obviously, reprising her role as Hawkgirl.

Besides this, there is the show which most people probably know Merced from: The Last of Us. Where she is starring in quite a big role, next to Bella Ramsey, playing the love interest of the Main Character. Merced seems to be quite loved in this show, so hopefully we’ll love her just as much in the DC Universe!
