The Riddler: The Master Strategist

Written by: Wade Cochran

Edward Nygma: Riddles in All Crimes

Who do we have here? Edward Nygma, or we used to call him the Riddler, is a master strategist who incorporates riddles into all of his crimes in Gotham City. His acts make him an enemy of the city protector, Batman.

Edward Nygma’s Origin

Despite having a "questionable past," Edward Nygma was Bruce Wayne's uncle and the trusted strategist to Philip Kane, the CEO of Wayne Enterprises, before making his debut as the Riddler. When Bruce came back to Gotham and threatened Nygma's secret plans, Nygma used the Red Hood Gang to try to kill him, but it didn't work out. After compromising his position, he abruptly quit, using a magnet to imprison Philip Kane in his office, and focused on carrying out his ambitious plan for Gotham.

The Riddler’s Plan

A Darkness Gotham

Gotham was plunged into darkness by Edward Nygma, the Riddler, who said that its residents had to "get smart or die." Together with resentful scientist Karl Helfern, he developed a survival challenge that would force Gotham to change. During an upcoming cyclone, he destroyed retaining walls, flooding the city and turning it into a wild jungle using a chemical Dr. Pamela Isley had given him. Riddler persisted in his game while Batman was busy with Helfern, eventually bringing the Dark Knight to the Gotham Museum for a dramatic confrontation that included twelve riddles.

Defeated by Batman

He was defeated by Batman before the city's weather balloons could be launched, bringing power back and putting a stop to the chaos. Nygma was confined to Arkham Asylum and put in a straitjacket because Blackgate considered him too dangerous.

The War of Jokes and Riddles

The GCPD used the Riddler's intelligence to get out of Arkham by scaring guards by knowing who they were. After looking into an odd series of Joker killings, he concluded that the clown had lost his capacity for humor and offered a collaboration to beat Batman. When the Joker shot him instead, the War of Jokes and Riddles began. Batman was forced to support Riddler despite the fact that he killed Kite-Man's son because both villains gathered soldiers and caused chaos in Gotham. Riddler revealed that his plan to solve the puzzle of reviving the Joker's laughter had involved the entire battle. Batman attempted to knife him because he was furious about the unnecessary deaths, but Joker protected Nygma, which was so ridiculous that it made him laugh once more. After then, both offenders were taken into custody and returned to Arkham Asylum.

PERSONALITY AND ABILITIES

Personality and Minds

The Riddler’s Personality

Edward Nygma, one of the Dark Knight's most notorious antagonists, likes to show off his superior intelligence by committing crimes and leaving hints for Batman to decipher. Although the well-known Riddler consistently fails in his illegal activities due to this habit, his puzzle-problem truly results from a fundamental psychological urge in addition to his own narcissism and ego. As a result, after his eventual capture, the Riddler frequently ends up living at Arkham Asylum.

Inside His Genius Mind

With a mind like that of a genius, the Riddler sets complicated, occasionally Rube Goldberg-style traps and is even prepared to use defenseless people as bait. Despite his lack of physical strength, the Riddler is a very dangerous enemy due to his intelligence, neurosis, and lack of empathy. He views the people he employs in his schemes as nothing more than puppets in his ongoing intellectual conflict with Batman, and he could not care less about their lives.

Abilities and Weapons

Some, like the Penguin, believe that Edward Nygma's genius-level intelligence is superior compared to Mr. Terrific, Lex Luthor, and Batman. In addition to mechanical ability, demolitions, escapology, and a variety of combat talents like stick fighting and swordsmanship, his skills include tactical analysis, investigation, computer hacking, engineering, gadgetry, surveillance, deception, and leadership. He has created sophisticated weapons, such as his technologically advanced question-mark staff, and led legions of villains. He is a skilled strategist and planner. His quest to outsmart Batman and demonstrate his intellectual superiority, however, drives his obsessive-compulsive disorder and narcissism, weakening his genius through an obsession with making puzzles and leaving clues.
