What is Detective Comics #285?

When was Detective Comics #285 created and by who?

Detective Comics #285 was published in November, 1960. Bill Finger was the one who wrote it, while editors included Murray Boltinoff and George Kashdan. Jack Schiff was the Executive Editor for this comic strip, which included 3 different sections.

What sections are there in Detective Comics #285?

The sections within the comic strip consisted of: “The Mystery of the Man-Beast”, “The Good-luck Prophet”, and “The Menace of the Martian Mandrills!” which each focuses on one more well-known character. What can only be assumed as the most well-known of these sections were The Mystery of the Man-Beast which included the very well-known Batman.

Detective Comics #285: The Mystery of the Man-Beast

The Mystery of the Man-Beast has an interesting story, which some may guess easily based on the title. The story starts out with a Caveman that has been frozen into the ice – slowly, he is thawed out, and as he comes back to life he goes on a rampage of destruction. The Professor who originally found the Caveman in the ice is later on found dead, and as the Caveman has now gone on a destruction rampage, it is suspected that he is the reason that the Professor has been found dead. Batman, Robin, and Batwoman, who are the main important characters within this comic section, believe otherwise, and they work together to find the person who originally killed the Professor, cause it was not the Caveman. That said, the criminal had actually attempted to frame the Caveman as a way of getting away with his crime. His original plan was that he wished to steal valuable items from the museum that the Professor ran, but was found by the Professor. This section mainly focuses on Batman, Robin, and Batwoman as they find the real culprit, but Commissioner Gordon also makes a cameo.

Detective Comics #285: The Good-Luck Prophet and The Menace of the Martian Mandrills

The other sections of the comic includes The Good-Luck Prophet which includes Roy Raymond Sr (Not Roy Raymond the Owlman), Karen Duncan, Provo the Prophet and Jons. The last section is The Menace of the Martian Mandrills! which (as the name may suggest) includes Martian Manhunter, Captain Harding and a bunch of criminals. This section starts with a gang of crooks finding a Martian rocket, which carried three mandrills, having crashed on Earth. On top of finding this rocket, they also found a device that they could use to mentally control the mandrills and, therefore, making them incredibly capable of theft. When these mandrills are used to steal things, J’onn J’onzz ends up discovering that not even his powers are strong enough to stop these mandrills. He does figure out that they are weak to fire, so he makes police officers light up their cigarettes around the mandrills. While the mandrills are weakened, J’onzz captures the crooks which makes him capable of stopping the mandrills. The mandrills are sent back into space, and Captain Harding asks whether J’onzz would like to return to Mars with the mandrills, but he says no, and that his job is not finished on Earth just yet.
