Batman: "Challenge of the Man-Bat!"

Synopsis

Kirk Langstrom, a zoologist at the Gotham Natural History Museum, secretly works on a serum derived from bat glands, hoping to enhance human hearing. In the meantime, a gang of criminals known as the Blackout Gang robs people while wearing specialized equipment that allows them to work in complete darkness. After stopping one of their robberies, Batman retrieves an ultrasonic cutter and returns it to the Wayne Foundation for examination.

Langstrom obtains superhuman hearing when he tests his formula on himself, but he quickly discovers that the serum is altering his body more than his senses. Langstrom is horrified to learn that he is changing into a bat-like monster as his sensitivity to light increases and he begins to physically change. He chooses to hide until he can find a cure because he fears what he might become.

The museum is the target of the Blackout Gang's subsequent heist that same evening. Batman tracks them using modern sonar instruments, but they are able to confuse him with noise. The freshly changed Man-Bat steps in just when it looks like the group is winning. Man-Bat and Batman work together to fight the villains. But Man-Bat runs away as Batman tries to thank him, leaving the Dark Knight to question whether this odd creature will eventually be an ally or an enemy.

Synopsis

As Batgirl, Barbara Gordon answers a call for assistance while driving to Hudson University's library. She finds a body inside the building after being momentarily overcome by a young man who is running away. As she follows him, she witnesses two students assaulting Mark Osher before Dick Grayson comes to her aid. Batgirl tells the authorities why she is on campus and finds out that Osher is suspected of killing the university's business manager, Amos Willard. Both Osher, who had publicly threatened Willard, and Professor Huntington, the school's biologist, opposed his idea to clear a nearby forest for the construction of a gym.

Osher claims his innocence during questioning, saying he was knocked unconscious in the library and only became alarmed when he woke up to discover Willard dead. Batgirl chooses to look further since she is not convinced by the straightforward justification for his actions. When she returns to the crime scene, she is unexpectedly attacked, rendered unconscious, and awakened to discover her assailant has gagged her, chained her, and imprisoned her in a brick-walled room.
