Story of Batman: Arkham Video Game Series

Each title has different stories. Through this part, we will try to summarize some of the stories from some of the existing titles. They are separated into two parts: main series and other games.

Main Series of “Batman: Arkham” Video Game Series

This part of the article consists of the main story of the series.

Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009)

Batman: Arkham Asylum is the first game of the series, and it is available on PS3, PS4, Switch, X360, XOne, Macbook, and Windows PC. This game took place in Arkham Island where they had, as mentioned in the name, Arkham Asylum, a psychiatric hospital where most Batman villains were placed. The main storyline once again involved Joker, Batman’s archenemy. Joker’s plan involved making sure that Batman was trapped in Arkham Island while Joker himself threatened Gotham City with hidden bombs. Batman had to fight the inmates of the asylum and stop Joker before it was too late.

Batman: Arkham City (2011)

Eighteen months after Batman: Arkham Asylum’s main story, Batman: Arkham City’s story began (more or less the same time as the actual release, most likely). In this story, Batman was imprisoned in Arkham City, which wasn’t a city but actually a super-prison, established by a former Arkham Asylum warden and the current mayor of Gotham City. Batman found out that there was a sinister scheme coded “Protocol 10”, which he must uncover. He also had to survive from the dangers within the prison. At the same time, Joker was apparently dying due to an experimental chemical.

Batman: Arkham Origins (2013)

If Batman: Arkham City is a sequel, then Batman: Arkham Origins is a prequel. It was set eight years before Batman: Arkham Asylum. This is also the first game of the series that allows multiplayers. The story was about the young Batman who had a bounty set by Black Mask. This caused eight world’s deadliest assassins to come to Gotham and hunt for Batman. The story also showed Batman’s first encounters with some important people in his later life: Joker, James Gordon, and even Mr Freeze.

Batman: Arkham Knight (2015)

This title is another sequel to Batman: Arkham City, set nine months after it. This game followed the return of Scarecrow who united some of Batman’s greatest villains in order to destroy the vigilante.

Other Games of “Batman: Arkham” Video Game Series

This part of the article consists of the other games in the series, but not heavily related to the main story.

Batman: Arkham City Lockdown (2011) and Batman: Arkham Origins (mobile) (2013)

These two titles have the same story, set as a prequel of Batman: Arkham City, and also as a spin-off. The story followed Batman who attempted to capture some villains who managed to escape Arkham Asylum.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate (2013)

This game is a sequel of Batman: Arkham Origins, set three months after the events. Batman investigated an explosion in Blackgate Prison which allowed Joker, Black Mask, and Penguin to take over the prison. Batman, along with Catwoman, attempted to bring these criminals to justice.

Batman: Arkham Underworld (2016)

The storyline of this game was set a few years before Batman: Arkham Asylum. Instead of playing as Batman, the player played as the villains: the Riddler, Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Scarecrow, and Bane. The goal of the game is for these villains to be the best villain, so to speak.

Batman: Arkham VR (2016)

Here, Batman investigated the disappearance of Nightwing and Robin, set before Batman: Arkham Knight.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (2024)

Unlike the other titles, the game was set in Metropolis, not in Gotham. The city was under attack by Brainiac, and all Justice League members had fallen upon the mind-controlling technology. Hence, Amanda Waller assembled the Suicide Squad that consisted of Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark to stop Brainiac. In another version, Joker, Mr Freeze, Lawless, and Deathstroke are also playable.

Batman: Arkham Shadow (2024)

The story was six months after Batman: Arkham Origins which followed the story of Batman in stopping Rat King, a mysterious villain who wanted to destroy Gotham.
