Nabu the Wise: A Lord of Order

Written by: Arven Keating-Syndulla

Nabu: Limitless Power

Nabu might be one of the lesser-known DC characters, but that does not mean that this cosmic being is any less interesting. He arrived on Earth more or less a billion years ago and took a very proactive role in battling the Lords of Chaos. He has crazily magical abilities, and there is so much more to tell. So, let’s get into it, shall we? Starting with a brief history!

A Brief History of Nabu

The origins of Naby began over 10 billion years ago, at the formation of the universe, when two elemental forces were born: Lords of Order and Lords of Chaos. The Lords of Order lived on Cilia, where they manifested themselves as the first sentient race in the universe. Around 3500 BCE, the first of them descended to Earth. This was Nabu the Wise, who became an adviser to the pharaohs of ancient Egypt and a keeper of powerful talismans.

Nabu protected talismans such as the Amulet of Anubis, he battled beings like Spectre, and he recovered the Nth metal from a crashed Thanagarian starship out of which the Claw of Horus was carved. However, after all of this, he had to put himself in a trance, weakened when he faced an incarnation of Wotan. He placed himself inside of a tomb and healed from his injurasies, for millennia.

Nabu and Kent Become Doctor Fate

It was Sven Nelson (an archaeologist) and his son, Kent, who woke Nabu up in the 1940s. Due to an accident, Sven lost his life on this journey, and Nabu decided to help Kent by aging him up to a full-grown man and teaching him magic. He gave Kent the Helmet of Nabu, the Amulet of Anubis, and the Cloak of Destiny. All powerful items. When Kent put on the helmet, however, Nabu would become part of him and they would become Doctor Fate together. In the time as Doctor Fate, Nabu became a founding member of the Justice Society of America.

A lot of Merging and Reincarnations of Nabu

When Kent became too old to still be Doctor Fate, Nabu found new people to bind with. First Eric, then Linda. However, Nabu did take Kent’s body (when he passed away from old age) to enjoy life as a human. That was, until he returned Kent to his youth and let him merge with his wife, Inza, to become Doctor Fate again. The Nabu was reincarnated as the child of people named Eugene and Wendy, who were reincarnations of Eric and Linda (who he had previously formed Doctor Fate with). After all of this, the mantle fell to Jared Stevens. However, due to a whole mess, Nabu ruined this and it ended up with him turning into a Lord of Chaos - his previous enemy as a Lord of Order. Hector Hall was the last in line to merge with Nabu.

Nabu’s Powers & Abilities

Nabu is an extremely powerful sorcerer, which mean that most of his power and abilities lie within the magical realm and, specifically, within occultism. His knowledge on the mystic arts is huge. This brings with it abilities such as possession, telepathy, transformation, mystic senses, illusion casting, dimensional travel, flight, and even more! One of the few Metahumans who has all of those, truth be told. Oh, and to not forget, he is also immortal.

Nabu’s Weaknesses

With superpowers and the responsibilities that come with them, there is usually also a downside. A weakness (or several). Nabu has one of those, as well. In the case of Nabu, these are the Divine Forces. These are the only ones who could possibly slay Nabu and stop his abilities.
