Flower of the Week

Edition 01
Hello Everyone :D My name is Anya Valentine, and in this blog, called Flower of the Week, we will talk about different flowers. Throughout this, I will explain a bit about each flower. Shall we see what today’s flower is?
Hibiscus
Origin

Hibiscus occurs naturally in tropical regions throughout the world, most notably China, India, Madagascar, Fiji and Hawaii. The eight species of hibiscus original to these places are considered the botanical parents of the 300 related species that still exist, as well as the many modern hybrids available today. Although these original eight are cross-compatible with each other and have been used to create new varieties for more than three centuries, their hybrid offspring are not. Collectively, all hibiscus species are members of the Malvaceae family, which includes mallow, okra, cotton and cacao.

Of particular significance in the history of hibiscus is the island nation of Mauritius, located off the eastern coast of Africa. Many native plants have travelled from this island to other parts of the world since the early 18th century. Then, in the early 19th century, Charles Telfair, a botanist and surgeon with the British Royal Navy, left his home in Belfast, Ireland, to settle in Mauritius, where he and his wife, Annabella, documented their twenty-year journey of hybridising hibiscus. His contributions to horticulture are still honoured today.
Symbolic Meanings

In Hinduism, the red hibiscus is a flower of immense spiritual importance. It is particularly sacred to the powerful Goddess Kali, the embodiment of divine feminine energy (Shakti). The flower's red colour is said to symbolise her fierce compassion, and its shape is believed to represent her ability to absorb the sorrows and negativity of her devotees. It is also a common offering to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.

In Hawaii, the hibiscus is a living part of social tradition. It is a powerful symbol of the "aloha" spirit, representing hospitality, friendship, and a relaxed way of life. Famously, the flower can be used to signal one's relationship status: a woman wearing a hibiscus behind her right ear is advertising that she is single, while wearing it behind her left ear indicates she is in a relationship.

The hibiscus has found a prominent place in modern self-expression, especially in tattoo art. A hibiscus tattoo often signifies a connection to island life, a love for the tropics, or a laid-back philosophy. For the wearer, it can be a permanent reminder of delicate beauty, personal resilience, or the importance of living in the moment. The choice of colour adds a deeply personal layer to its meaning.

The flower's influence extends to wellness and cuisine. Dried hibiscus calyces are used to make a popular herbal tea, known as tisane or roselle tea. This crimson-coloured drink has a distinctively tart, cranberry-like flavour and is enjoyed hot or cold worldwide.

It is celebrated for its health benefits, being rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, and is traditionally used to help manage blood pressure and promote circulatory health. In various cultures, hibiscus extracts are also used in traditional remedies for hair and skin care, prized for their conditioning and rejuvenating properties.
Interview Time

Today, we have the wonderful Alina Colter here to answer some questions :D

Anya: What do hibiscuses mean to you?

Alina: Well I believe that hibiscus has multiple meanings since it has a variety of colors. Personally, I believe that it means bravery, intelligence and finding beauty in everything.

Anya: What colour hibiscus do you think represents you?

Alina: I think a white hibiscus respresents me, not because it's "pure" or "perfect" but because it holds meaning for many things at once like curiosity, calmness and peace. Though its not one of the brightest colors, it quietly grabs attention in a garden.

Anya: If a hibiscus could speak to you, what would it say?

Alina: I think it would say:
"Blooming isnt about becoming something else. Its about discovering more about yourself and unfolding at your own pace without comparing your journey to anyone else's"

Anya: That will be all. Thank youu :D.
