‣ Harley's History

Harlene always had a complicated relationship with her father, who had morals that were frowned upon, yet also sparked her fascination with the criminal mind. Being academically intelligent led her to pursue a psychiatric medical degree at Gotham University, as this was the quickest method of being able to treat criminal behaviour in institutions such as Arkham Asylum. During her time at Gotham University, Harley developed her skills in gymnastics, which later helped her with her acrobatic abilities displayed as Harley Quinn. To become a fully qualified psychiatrist, Harlene trained under the psychiatrist Dr. Hugo Strange as part of the psychiatrist team at Blackgate Prison. By Christmas Eve that year, she was almost finished with her psychiatric residency at Blackgate when a patient by the name of Julian Gregory Day (also known as the serial killer going by Calendar Man) was brought in by the GCPD, with anonymous help from Batman. Harlene was asked to do a psychological evaluation of him and determined he was insane and couldn’t be executed. However, Warden Joseph had her redo the assessment under the pretence that he was manipulating her (even though he was the one being manipulated). She did it under one condition - she would be the one allowed to do all psychiatric evaluations on all new prisoners from that point.

Harlene met Joker when he first arrived at Blackgate after being captured by the GCPD at the Royal Hotel, where she conducted her psychiatric evaluation on him through word association. During their session, Joker described the encounter between him and Batman, and that it changed the way he thought, but he never said that he was talking about Batman. Harleen thought Joker was talking about her, which led her to develop an affinity towards her patient.

A few months later, Joker, Black Mask, and Penguin broke out and took over different sections of Blackgate. Harlene wasn’t on duty when that had occurred, but she developed a soft spot for the Joker, calling him Mr J. After recapturing all the crime bosses, Harleen was able to return to work as an official doctor.

After this, Harlene continued to treat her patients with understanding and empathy, being one of the only two psychiatrists at Blackgate alongside Johnathan Crane. Warden Joseph was fired after two breakouts, which allowed her to work without manipulation. She began to have group therapies to help with childhood issues that shaped inmates.

Crane forcibly took his patients for experiments to understand the shadow. Harlene was not pleased with her work; she kept trying to help everyone she could, including Arnold Wesker. When Batman arrived, she worked with him and discovered that Crane was using a chemical on the patients against their will, forcing them to confront their shadows. Harlene later reported Crane to get him fired.

Eventually, Harlene interned at Arkham Asylum after it had undergone a complete renovation. She underwent employee orientation with Dr. Gretchen Whistler and was assigned a permanent office located on the Medical Facility’s lower floor, in the South Access Corridor. That’s where she continued her work as a criminal psychiatrist and assigned herself to psychologically assess and treat the Joker after previously experiencing his behaviour first-hand at Blackgate.

Over the course of taped interviews with the Joker, he recognised Harlene's affinity towards him, which allowed him to easily manipulate her by complimenting her, giving her flowers, and portraying himself as a victim. Harleen was oblivious to all this and the fact that she had overestimated her abilities to treat the Joker, so she did not realise that the Joker was using her. Which led her to empathise with him, and believe Batman was the criminal instead. Later on, her affection towards the Joker had developed so strongly that she began to kiss the glass on the cell he was locked in. Harleen eventually fell in love with the Joker. This was evident by posters found in her office at Arkham Asylum. After hearing his orders, she even smuggled bombs to break into his cell and free him.

She wore her jester outfit and presented herself to the Joker as “Harley Quinn” and spent years serving as the Joker's girlfriend and sidekick. Even though she served him faithfully, Joker often used her as a hostage to escape Batman or as a scapegoat. He only kept her around because of her importance in the execution of his plans and for entertainment purposes.

Harley was also drafted into the Suicide Squad by Amanda Waller, who planted a high-explosive nano bomb in the back of her neck. She was forced on numerous missions with an ever-changing crew as they either died or were bombed for disobedience. Two other villains she worked with were Deadshot and Captain Boomerang. She was broken out of custody by the Joker many times.

At some point, she and Joker were invited to the Iceberg Lounge to boost the club’s reputation. Unfortunately, a clumsy waitress spilled a drink on Joker, melting the poor girl’s face from the acid on his flower. From then on, the Penguin banned them from the club, and perhaps in revenge, the Joker and Harley stole a trunk full of cigarettes from the Penguin and crashed it into a river so that they could laugh at his reaction.

Harley eventually became good friends with Poison Ivy, whom she nicknamed “Red” Throughout this friendship, Harley had her immune system strengthened by Ivy, who made Harley Immune to most toxins. Both girls would often make each other laugh after sharing some beers. They even did a heist where they stole diamonds and stored them in a safe. They shared secrets, some of which weren’t quite appropriate to be shared. They also worked with Catwoman at some stage, becoming known as the Gotham Sirens.
